What Should I Do Before and After Balloon Sinuplasty Treatment?

Sinus problems are challenging and it’s understandable why anyone would be willing to do anything to get rid of them.  Countless brands and products line pharmacy shelves dedicated to helping you deal with your symptoms. But very few of them can truly fix the problem.

While many see surgery as a last resort, there’s an alternative.  Balloon Sinuplasty is a quick procedure that expands the airways without having to cut into any tissue.

Even though it’s easy and convenient, being prepared and knowing what to expect before and after the treatment is worth it.

Balloon Sinuplasty Preparation

It can be tempting to get caught up in the excitement but it pays not to be so hasty.  Several seemingly insignificant factors can affect your recovery.

Below are some things to consider:

  • Avoiding medications:  Painkillers (Aspirin, NSAIDs like Advil), vitamin e, and herbal supplements like ginseng can increase chances of bleeding.  Run everything by your doctor to see if anything can cause complications.
  • Smoking:  A full month before your treatment you should consider kicking the habit, even if it’s temporary.  Smoking can cause scar tissue and interfere with healing.
  • Drinking:  Drinking alcohol anywhere near 2 weeks out from the procedure is a big mistake because it dilates your blood vessels.  This can cause swelling and risk bleeding.

Similar to surgical procedures, it’s wise not to eat anything after midnight the night before.  This is so there’s no chance of the local anesthetic being affected.

Balloon Sinuplasty can be done in a jiffy but that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook.  Like all things, if you want it to last you’ll have to look after it.   Below we’ll talk about things to keep in mind for after your treatment.

Immediately After Your Balloon Sinuplasty Procedure

After you’re done at the doctor’s office, you’ll want to make sure you dot the I’s and cross the T’s.

You’ll be up and about the following day and mild discomfort should be expected but it can be kept to a minimum.  Your doctor will most likely prescribe some kind of rinse and medication. It’s important to use them exactly as indicated.  No excuses!

Blowing your nose should be avoided for at least 12 hours after you’ve left the office.  If bleeding starts, wait another 12 hours and remember to be gentle, you’re still healing.

If you’re finding congestion is a problem, you should elevate your head.  This is completely normal and it should fade in a few weeks.

Lastly, as we mentioned above, stay away from anything that could thin your blood.

Post-Procedure Balloon Sinuplasty Best Practices

After your treatment is no time to throw caution to the wind.  If you’re even slightly unclear, reach out to your doctor for some clarification.  Having relief within reach is a great feeling and you can have it without any hiccups by applying some care and diligence.

Just had this procedure done yesterday and feeling better already. The procedure itself was almost completely pain free. There is a little bloody discharge for about a day or two, but nothing horrible. A Bit of nasal soreness on day two, but the pressure around my eyes, ears, nose, and forehead are non existent. Would recommend this to anyone suffering with sinus pressure and pain. Also my Dr. And his staff are amazing which is rare these days.
